What is a Bao?

Gua Bao (割包) is a popular Taiwanese street food served in restaurants and night markets around the world. They are a type of handheld sandwich, not to be confused with the traditional Chinese Baozi (包子) which resembles a round white dumpling.

The buns are traditionally cooked in bamboo steamers instead of baked in an oven. They are light, fluffy and slightly sweet to taste. Though originating in Asia, they are the perfect vehicle for any type of filling and any type of cuisine! Whether you fill them with the traditional stewed pork belly, or with hot dogs, cheese steak or chicken parm, the possibilities are endless!

However, Gua Bao are traditionally made with wheat flour, and are thus indigestible to those with gluten sensitivities. But now we at the Gluten Free Bao Company are pleased to offer the traditional taste of Taiwanese style baos using only gluten free ingredients!
